Description:

Pre-Columbian, Southern Mexico to Guatemala, Olmec to Proto-Maya culture, ca. 500 BCE to 300 CE. A hand-built pottery female figure seated upon slender, crossed legs. The nude woman holds one arm to her thigh and the other bent as if telling a story, has petite breasts above a rounded abdomen, and bears stocky shoulders. Her stylized countenance exhibits Olmecoid features such as impressed almond-shaped eyes, a bulbous nose, full lips, and earspools, all beneath an incised, centrally-parted coiffure that cascades behind the verso. Traces of white and red-orange pigment are visible across the sculpture and imbue it with a classic presentation of the ancient Maya! Size: 3.3" W x 4.875" H (8.4 cm x 12.4 cm).

Provenance: private southern California, USA collection, acquired in the 1970s to mid-1980s
