Description:

Pre-Columbian, Southern Mexico to Guatemala, Olmec, ca. 1150 to 500 BCE. A finely modeled terracotta head fragment of an Olmec baby with distinct child-like features characteristic of Olmec figures including jowly 'babyface' cheeks, a downturned and open were jaguar mouth, and almond-shaped eyes with pierced pupils, this distinct visage upon an elongated head, as scholars have proposed that misshapen heads are indicative of the artificial cranial deformation practiced by the Olmec culture. A wonderful example that stands apart for its particularly expressive countenance and the wonderful red cinnabar gracing its surfaces. Custom stand. Size: 2.625" W x 3.375" H (6.7 cm x 8.6 cm); 4.75" H (12.1 cm) on included custom stand.
