Description:

Pre-Columbian, Southern Mexico to Guatemala, Olmec culture, ca. 1150 to 550 BCE. A hand-built pottery female figure, of advanced age and portly stature, seated with crossed legs atop a wide base. The woman wears a knee-length skirt beneath her rotund abdomen, displays pendulous breasts beneath slender shoulders, and boasts a thick neck. Her bald, rounded head displays incised ovoid eyes, a broad nose, protruding cheek bones, tab-shaped ears, and thin lips. Her body is colored with pale orange-brown pigment. Size: 2.125" L x 2.3" W x 3" H (5.4 cm x 5.8 cm x 7.6 cm); 3.75" H (9.5 cm) on included custom stand.

  • Condition: Head reattached to neck, with restoration to one side of face, and resurfacing and overpainting along break lines and new material. Minor abrasions to body and head, with a couple of stable hairline fissures, light encrustations, and softening to some finer details. Light earthen deposits and manganese blooms throughout.
