Description:

Pre-Columbian, Southern Mexico to Guatemala, Olmec, ca. 1200 to 300 BCE. A hollow baby figure in an unusual, seated position, with legs folded back and one forward. The characteristically plump limbs, chubby torso with skin rolls, and dimpled face are distinctive of these so called “baby figures.” There are 5 note holes drilled into the surface, possibly this piece was made to function as an ocarina or a whistle, however it no longer emits sound. The Olmec are famous for their human depictions of young children or babies are a recurring theme from Olmec art, and this one would likely have once been white-slipped to match other known examples. Size: 3" L x 2.3" W x 5" H (7.6 cm x 5.8 cm x 12.7 cm)
