Description:

Pre-Columbian, southern Mexico/Guatemala, Olmec culture, Early period, ca. 1150 to 850 BCE. A broad grayware vessel with steep walls and a flat base. The exterior of the vessel has incised motifs on one side that are highly abstract, perhaps suggesting a zoomorphic face with the curled lines meant to represent snouts. Olmec grayware vessels first appeared in the Cruz B phase, perhaps inspired by developments to the north in the Valley of Oaxaca; they are typically thinner-walled and better fired than vessels that came before them, representing an advancement in technology. Size: 5.75" W x 4.35" H (14.6 cm x 11 cm)

Provenance: collection of the late Alfred E. Stendahl, Stendahl Gallery, Los Angeles, California, USA, acquired prior to 1990
