Description:

Pre-Columbian, Southern Mexico to Guatemala, Olmec, ca. 900 to 600 BCE. A carved greenstone Olmec dwarf figure, with a quintessentially childlike posture, kneeling and presenting clenched fists before him, its skyward gazing classic Olmec baby visage with string-cut slanted, almost Asiatic eyes, full fleshy cheeks, and downturned jaguar mouth. The pear-shaped head reflects the use of compression cradleboards with constricting wraps, a practice some believe was done to emulate early versions of the Maize God. A strong example. Size: 1.875" W x 3.125" H (4.8 cm x 7.9 cm)

Provenance: Ex-private Peter Arnovick collection, Los Altos, CA, USA acquired around 1980. Mr. Arnovick was a collector and dealer of ancient and ethnographic cultures.
