Description:

North America, Western United States, South Dakota, White River / Brule Formation, Oligocene, ca. 33 to 30 million years ago. A fossilized complete skull and articulated leg and foot from a prehistoric Merycoidodon culbertsoni, an ungulate mammal commonly referred to as an Oreodont, meaning "mountain teeth." Oreodonts are an extinct family of cud-chewing herbivores and had traits that are often described as primitive pig, sheep, or camel like. They once roamed the prehistoric North American grasslands in herds, their feet had four toes - as seen on the leg. It is probable the bones were jumbled together as they fossilized- hence the unnatural placement of the leg. Size: 10" L x 4" W x 5" H (25.4 cm x 10.2 cm x 12.7 cm); 8" H (20.3 cm) on included custom stand.
