Ancient Near East, Mesopotamia, Babylon, Old Babylonian period, ca. 2000 to 1600 BCE. A mold-formed terracotta plaque featuring a relief image of Ashtoreth, the Babylonian goddess of war. The rectangular plaque features Ashtoreth striding to her left while holding a weapon in each hand while supporting a quiver of arrows behind each shoulder. She wears intricately incised armor with a lengthy skirt and dons a tiered headdress atop her feminine visage. Ashtoreth is a contemporary version of Astarte, an ancient goddess associated with war as well as fertility and motherhood. Size: 3" W x 5.5" H (7.6 cm x 14 cm); 6.125" H (15.6 cm) on included custom stand.
