Description:

Ancient Near East, Mesopotamia, Babylon, Old Babylonian Period, ca. 1900 to 1700 BCE. A hand-built clay tablet of an ovoid form displaying roughly 13 or 14 partial lines of inscribed cuneiform text. The cuneiform text is first inscribed in the still-wet clay with a sharpened reed prior to being placed inside of a kiln so the script can be made legible and unalterable. While not fully translated, a brief interpretation of the text indicates this tablet records amounts of bread given to several named persons, followed by a summary. Size: 2.1" W x 2" H (5.3 cm x 5.1 cm)

Provenance: private New York, New York, USA collection; ex-private Brooklyn, New York, USA collection, acquired in the 2000s; ex-Dr. Byron Lipkin collection, United Kingdom
