Description:

Native American / First Nations, Pacific Northwest Coast, United States or Canada, Makah, ca. mid to late 20th century CE. A hand-carved wood rattle in the form of an orca (killer whale) with an anthropomorphic face carved where the dorsal fin would be. The eyes are inlaid with shimmering nacre shells, and the rattle functions as intended, filled with small pebbles. The underside of the tail is signed in pencil "Who-Ywo-Toolch" possibly for Arnie Smith, a Makah artist. Size: 11" L x 2.75" W x 3.5" H (27.9 cm x 7 cm x 8.9 cm)
