Description:

Native American, Northwestern United States, Northern California, Pomo, ca. late 20th century CE. A hand-made basket coiled and twined from regional plants - sedge grass, fern root, willow, and/or bracken- and then covered with white and iridescent orange-red, and blue-black feathers from pheasants. Traditional ornate baskets were usually given as gifts perhaps during a wedding or other special event to redistribute wealth and were often covered with native bird feathers such as quail and woodpecker. Pheasants were widely used in the late 20th century – adding exquisite vibrancy and coverage to the surfaces of the baskets! Size: 5" Diameter x 1.5" H (12.7 cm x 3.8 cm)

Provenance: private Alamo, California, USA collection, before 2000
