Description:

North America, Southeastern United States, Florida, Pliocene to Pleistocene era, ca. 5 million to 11,000 years ago. This is an awesome find: a fossilized claw core from a prehistoric ground sloth. Since this is just a claw without bone, the exact species is unknown, but the size and preservation of this would suggest it comes from a Florida river deposit (such as the Peace River). These ground sloths were massive creatures and considered megafauna- many times larger than the slow tree dwelling species we are familiar with today- some were as large as elephants! There were many species of ground sloths in the Americas, but all died out about 11,000 years ago due to climate change and even human hunting. Size along curve: 2.2" L x 0.5" W (5.6 cm x 1.3 cm)
