Morris (Moy) Sutherland / Hiish-Miik (First Nations Canadian, Nuu-chah-nulth (Nootka), 1974- present) ca. 2005 CE. A large wooden mask of the supernatural being, Pook-mis, with lengthy horsehair and raffia tassels. The wood is carved with pursed lips and layered gills to resemble a fish - the white symbolizes the ghostly and watery characteristics of this sea spirit, who embodies a drowned whale hunter. The verso is signed and dated. Moy Sutherland, traditional name Hiish-Miik, is a master carver of Ahousaht and Tla-o-qui-aht ancestry, with pieces displayed internationally in galleries, museums including the University of Victoria Legacy Art Galleries and The University of Tennessee McClung Museum of Natural History & Culture. Size of mask: 20.5" L x 11.75" W (52.1 cm x 29.8 cm); the hair adds 25" Length (63.5 cm)
