Description:

Africa, Northern Nigeria, Nok, ca. 500 BCE to 600 CE. A finely, modeled terracotta head from one of the oldest African centers of figural sculpture and ironworks. Every Nok head that I have encountered is unique in some way, and this one is no exception; however, it also displays telltale characteristics of the classical Nok style - an enlarged haughty head, a high smooth forehead, wide set eyes with perforated pupils, and an elaborately detailed coiffure or headdress - in this case presenting a dotted pattern, pointed horns, and striated appliques to either side of the eyes and on the back of the head. A fascinating form created by a Nok sculptor about two thousand years ago, a rare example! Size: 5.25" W x 8.25" H (13.3 cm x 21 cm)
