Description:

Near East, Persia (Iran), Nishapur, ca. 10th century CE. One of my favorites! An elegant, large ceramic bowl with a wide disc base and flaring walls. The decoration is sparing - a band of Kufic script around the interior and a stylized bird on a branch in tondo - painted in a deep black manganese-based pigment against a creamy white glazed background. The script is a repetition of a prayer - "Barakah", literally "blessing" or "increase in something". Kufic is the earliest form of Arabic calligraphy, used as the main script to copy the Qur'an until the 11th century. It was used on Seljuk coins, monuments, pottery, and jewelry. Indeed, the outstanding Kufic calligraphy that decorates the walls of the Alhambra features repeated instances of "Barakah". Size: 10.25" W x 3.25" H (26 cm x 8.3 cm)
