Description:

West Africa, Nigeria, Nupe culture, ca. mid-20th century CE. A stool carved from a single piece of wood, featuring a flat top supported by four thick legs with inward-curved protrusions at the feet. A pair of handles project from the seat, and the flat top is adorned with etched geometric motifs, reflecting the Islamic influence on the majority of the Nupe people, rather than depictions of animals or figures. Traditionally, this type of stool was presented by a husband to his wife. The wood is notably dense and heavy, possibly teak. Size: 13" L x 15" W x 10.25" H (33 cm x 38.1 cm x 26 cm)
