Niels Walseth (Danish, 1914-2001). "Interlaken" oil on canvas, ca. 1960. Signed and titled "Interlaken" at lower right. A lovely painting depicting a charming village scene in the Swiss town of Interlaken by Danish artist Niels Walseth who made study trips across Europe, including Austria, Italy, Germany, Sweden, Norway, and Switzerland. The composition features quaint homes along a riverbank, a footbridge crossing the river in the middleground, flowering trees dotting the landscape, and a peasant woman approaching the entry to a home at the right, all set against the majestic snowcapped Swiss Alps. A beautiful painting by Niels Walseth mounted in an attractive gold-tone frame adorned with a beautiful reliefs of leaf and berry motifs. Size (painting): 15.75" L x 19.75" W (40 cm x 50.2 cm)

This painting was exhibited at J.J. Cunningham Gallery in Denver, Colorado and is accompanied by the Cunningham Gallery's exhibition label which reads in part, "Niels Walseth was inspired by the Peder Monsted and H.A. Brendekilde and practiced their tradition of painting. His motifs reflect the innocence of the simple life on the farm, in the village, and among the Alps. / In addition to country scenes throughout Denmark, he's very well known for motifs of village life in mountainous European countries such as Austria, Bavaria, Switzerland, and Sweden. / He educated at the Technical School in Copenhagen and was a pupil of Jacob Meyer. / He sold "An afternoon excursion on the lake" for $4,626 at Sotheby's, London in March 1990 (Lot 101, 10 1/4" by 27 1/6")." Please Note: Cunningham titled this painting "Summer Day in Austria" however "Interlaken" at the lower right of the painting indicates that the sight of this landscape was Interlaken, Switzerland.

  • Condition: Signed and titled "Interlaken" at lower right. Painting presents very nicely save a few surface scratches/abrasions - one over a flowering tree at center, one across the facade to the left of the peasant woman, and one to the right of the woman. Painting is mounted in an attractive gold-tone frame adorned with a beautiful reliefs of leaf and berry motifs which is in good condition save a few nicks and scuffs. Fit with suspension wire.
