Description:

Pre-Columbian, Costa Rica, Nicoya region, ca. 800 to 1200 CE. An impressive polychrome terracotta tripod rattle leg vessel, probably of the Pataky polychrome variety from the Greater Nicoya region of Pre-Columbian Costa Rica, in the form of an endearing coatimundi - with his arms - folded with hands resting beneath the cheeks of his adorable face - forming the two looped front legs of the vessel and his tail as the third rattle leg. The pear-shaped olla body above presents registers of stylized geometric as well as dotted and striated motifs in black and red on the tawny beige ground. Black decorative markings also adorn the animal's arms, face, and neck. A wonderful form whimsical and practical as the openings through the "arms" also likely served as means for suspension. Size: 6.875" W foot to foot x 8.75" H (17.5 cm x 22.2 cm)

Provenance: ex-Hilja K. Herfurth collection, Denver, Colorado, USA
