Description:

Pre-Columbian, Costa Rica, Nicoya, ca. 1000 to 1350 CE. A polychrome jaguar effigy tripod rattle bowl replete with a magnificent iconographical and decorative program. First off, the entire vessel assumes the form of a proud jaguar with a grand visage at the front, two arms in relief over the front legs and a tail on the backside. But then, look closely at those legs, and you will see that each one represents another jaguar visage. What's more, these jaguar legs each contain a rattle that produces a sonorous and rhythmic effect. As if that weren't enough, a band of stylized geometric motifs adorns both the interior and exterior walls of the vessel. Quite an impressive piece of Pre-Columbian pottery! Size: 8.5" L x 7" W x 4.25" H (21.6 cm x 17.8 cm x 10.8 cm)

Provenance: Ex- Young collection, Colorado Springs, CO, ex San Diego, CA collection
