Pre-Columbian, Costa Rica, Greater Nicoya, Period VI, ca. 1000 to 1350 CE. A hand-built pottery vessel depicting a highly stylized jaguar effigy standing atop 4 squat legs. The body is comprised of a tall drinking vessel with a feline head projecting from the front and a petite tail emanating from the verso, all enrobed in layers of brown, orange, and cream pigment. Rattle balls create a pleasing sound when jostled within the hollow body. Size: 5.25" L x 3.3" W x 4.3" H (13.3 cm x 8.4 cm x 10.9 cm)

  • Condition: Repair to side and verso of vessel body, and small losses to jaguar's teeth and mandible. Minor abrasions and fading to pigment, with light earthen deposits, and expected pitting and craquelure, otherwise in very good condition. Nice preservation to original pigment. Previous inventory label beneath body.
