Description:

Nicario Jimenez (also known as Nicario Jimenez Quispe - Peruvian, b. 1957). Mixed media sculpture, late 20th century. Signed on the verso. A beautiful three-dimensional retablo by Andean artist Nicario Jimenez. The exterior of this two door wooden retablo topped by a pediment crest is embellished with a hand-painted floral motif of scarlet, violet, fuchsia, yellow, gold, and white hues. Open the doors and a lively scene awaits! Dozens of brightly colored figurines participate in a prickly pear harvest as yellow birds perch upon the flowering cactus. Nicario has a personal connection to this art form, as he was born in a peasant community of the high Andes and is a third gneeration retablo artist. He skillfully carved and modeled eachfigure from a blend of boiled potato and gypsum powder and then hand-painted them. Jimenez pays homage to this cultural tradition in which an ensemble of figures, animals, and plants come together to tell a story from the rituals and daily lives of his people. • Condition: Signed by the artist on the verso. Expected age wear and minor scuffs to the finish. Minute losses to some figures' hands - primarily of the figures in front, and not unusual for retablos of this vintage. Otherwise very good and presents with wonderful imagery and artistry.
