Description:

South Asia, Nepal, ca. 1950 CE. A hollow cast brass depiction of the Bodhisattva Vajrasattva, seated upon a lotus throne, holding the traditional attributes, including the vajra in his right hand and the bell in his left hand. These are the most important ritual implements of Vajrayana Buddhism. The vajra, a device for meditation and concentration, signifies male compassion, and the bell symbolizes female wisdom. When paired, they constiutue the two elements essential to achieving salvation. Note that the figure is wearing a tiara with five rising floral spokes; these represent the five Dyani Buddhas. A lovely example with beautiful brown patina. Size: 8-1/2" x 6" x 4-1/2" (21.6 x 15.2 x 11.4 cm)

Provenance: Ex-private Northern Colorado collection; ex-Ming Asian Art Gallery; ex-private Seattle, WA Asian art collection.
