Description:

Northern Europe, Denmark, Neolithic period, ca. 3900 to 1700 BCE. A large chert hand axe that tapers from a thick butt to a sharp, curved blade. The chert axe was one of the major pieces of technology that marked Neolithic life in northwestern Europe, alongside farming, pottery, and longhouses. Axes of this sort are often found inside of dolmens (sunken tombs formed from large granite blocks). This example is notable for the natural beauty of the stone that the artisan has brought out through shaping and polishing - you can imagine someone selecting this exact stone and envisioning what it would look like once knapped, with its rich coppery and dark maroon tones. Size: 3.25" W x 9.55" H (8.3 cm x 24.3 cm); 12" H (30.5 cm) on included custom stand.

Provenance: private East Coast, USA collection; ex-private G. Windfelder collection, Germany, acquired in the 1980s
