East Asia, China, Neolithic period, Yangshao culture, ca. 3000 BCE. An impressive and quite rare pottery goblet drum known as a paigu from Neolithic China boasting a flared form that narrows to a slender body with a bulging base, all enveloped in liberal remains of red, black, and white painted decoration. Eight petite knobs line the rim, previously serving to hold the hide drumhead in place, while 2 ribbon-form handles can be seen just below the rim and near the base. This waisted drum is one of the earliest examples of a musical instrument from the Eurasian steppes in northeastern China! Size: 7.8" W x 11.5" H (19.8 cm x 29.2 cm)

This piece has been tested using thermoluminescence (TL) analysis and has been found to be ancient and of the period stated. A full printed and bound report will accompany the item upon purchase.
