Description:

East Asia, China, southeast Gonsu, Neolithic, Siwa culture, ca. 17th to 4th century BCE. An enormous and exemplary handmade pottery jar featuring a narrow, circular base and impressively thin walls that spread outwards to a broad, rounded shoulder, a corseted neck, and a flared rim that dips in the middle, known as a saddle mouth. A pair of lovely applied strap handles flank the rim, connecting it to the vessel's wide shoulder. Both the deep interior cavity and the exterior surfaces display a bright light-orange color, and there are areas of light- and dark-gray deposits across all areas. Size: 18" W x 20.25" H (45.7 cm x 51.4 cm)

This piece has been tested using thermoluminescence (TL) analysis and has been found to be ancient and of the period stated. A full report will accompany purchase.

Provenance: ex-private Hong Kong collection before 2000. TL performed in 2003 and on display at Chicago Merchandise Mart before 2008
