Description:

East Asia, China, Hongshan to Longshan culture, Neolithic Period, ca. 4700 to 1900 BCE. A superb nephrite jade carving of an abstract bird with bulging eyes and outstretched wings. A suspension hole is drilled horizontally through the shoulders, allowing the pendant to be attached or worn. The Neolithic Hongshan culture is primarily known from temple and tomb excavations, many containing jade or other stone objects carved in abstract or animal shapes like this one. The meaning of bird pendants is debated; however, many scholars associate them with heaven, as their flight is viewed as a connection between heaven and earth. Evidence for this comes from Shang dynasty oracle bones, inscribed with descriptions of the phoenix as heaven's messenger. Size: 2" L x 2.25" W (5.1 cm x 5.7 cm); 3.2" H (8.1 cm) on included custom stand.
