Western Europe, Neoclassical, ca. 19th century CE. This is a large and stunning banded-agate intaglio featuring Poseidon set into a 54% (equivalent to 12K+) gold bezel setting as a wearable pendant. The figure of Poseidon or Neptune is depicted with a cloth draped over his arms, otherwise he is nude with a muscular physique, standing in the classic contrapposto pose, and facing left with a trident in one hand, and a the other outstretched holding a dolphin. The polished agate is a lovely creamy gray with white and burnt orange banding and set in a form-fitting gold bezel with an open back- which is perfect for backlit displays to illuminate the glowing quality of the stone. At the top is an integral loop and suspension ring which is threaded on a modern cord with a lobster clasp as a wearable pendant.   • Condition: Chip to agate on left side center where it meets the bezel lip, otherwise agate intact with minor age and use related wear. Gold setting has a small bulge where the chip to agate occurs, and minor indentation to setting verso. Old inventory label on verso. Strung in modern times and made wearable with a modern cord.
