Description:

**First Time At Auction**

Western Europe, Neoclassical period, ca. 18th to 19th century CE. A large glass intaglio in a deep blue-green hue, engraved with a seated figure between grape vines. The man bare chested and possibly nude, with a thick beard and shoulder length hair - one hand outstretched towards the grape clusters. Perhaps he represents the Olympian god Bacchus (Greek Dionysus) - god of wine, pleasure, ritual madness, ecstasy, and theatre. The Neoclassical period saw immense European interest in the Classical world, in part inspired by the budding science of archaeology. Artists looked to the deep past for inspiration but brought an imaginative sensibility to their depictions of it.
