Description:

Europe, Neoclassical, ca. late 18th to early 19th century CE. A lovely 14K+ gold tie pin set with a sizeable oval agate intaglio carved with a nude male figure, probably Antinous, the Bithynian Greek youth who was the beloved of Roman Emperor Hadrian, or possibly young Silvanus, originally a Latin god of the woodlands and agricultural fertility who was adopted by the Romans. The figure holds a staff in his right hand and secures the calf of his left leg with his left hand as he places his foot upon his trusty dog carrying a basket upon its back. The groundline is delineated with rocky terrain, and there is an inscription to the left of the scene. The agate intaglio itself is translucent and presents with sunny yellow hues. Size: 1.3" L x .9" W (3.3 cm x 2.3 cm); weight: 10.1 grams. Gold quality: 59% to 60.12% gold, equivalent to 14K+
