Description:

Western Europe, Neoclassical Period, ca. 19th century CE. A wonderful carnelian intaglio of the Roman god Mars - Greek Ares - set in a gold ring to be wearable. Nude, save for a plumed helmet and sandals, the ancient deity is shown seated on a short column and facing left as he holds his right hand out before him, displaying a miniature figure of either the goddess Victoria - Greek Nike - or a winged victory in his palm. His slender body boasts defined abdomen muscles as his shield rests below him and he holds a sword to his side. Surely an allegorical scene, this image was meant represent victory in war. The gold ring presents a thin band and an ovoid bezel. The maker's marks "AM" and "CM" can be found in the interior of the band flanking a "14" hallmark indicating that the ring is 14 karat gold. Size (ring): 1" W (2.5 cm); (intaglio): 0.6" W x 0.7" H (1.5 cm x 1.8 cm); gold quality: 59.6% (equivalent to 14K+); weight: 7.3 grams; US ring size: 8.75
