Description:

Neo-Assyrian, ca. 7th century BCE. This matrix, or die, is executed in fine, light clay depicting a lion striding aggressively to left, tail upright and head outstretched with mouth open in a roar. Powerful head and shoulder mane. Actual figure formed from a positive stamp (patrix). Just over 4"H (10.4 cm). The style / type of the lion is similar to the large Neo-Assyrian alabaster reliefs with lion hunt scenes from the North Palace of Kouyunjik now in London, see P. Matthiae, Geschichte der Kunst im Alten Orient 1000-330 v.c. (1999) 77-81 with illus.
