Lot 69B
Near East, Neo-Assyrian, ca. 934 to 610 BCE. A section of a stone wall inscription with cuneiform script. Our translater determined that the characteristic wedge-shaped arrow-like marks are actually the beginnings of words. For instance, the first line has one partial and two complete signs. Given that this is a small piece of a wall inscription, a complete translation is not possible to decipher. Cuneiform text emerged in Sumer in the Uruk IV period during the late fourth millennium BCE. Beginning as a complex system comprised of pictograms, by the third millennium these were simplified and became smaller and more abstract. An intriguing example of this ancient form of writing from a wall inscription. Custom stand. Size: 2" L x 4.75" W x 3" H (5.1 cm x 12.1 cm x 7.6 cm); 6.375" H (16.2 cm) on stand
Provenance: Ex - Prominent LA County collector who acquired these prior to 2000, ex-Arte Primitivo
