Description:

Ancient Near East and Central Asia, Sumer and Bactria, ca. 3rd to 2nd millennium BCE. A fabulous necklace formed with dozens of colorful stone beads alternating with chalky faience beads in hues of grey, red, black, and white. Hanging in the center of the composition are five hand-carved Bactrian banded agate pendants in the form of a drop, a hemisphere, a spire mollusk shell, a foot, and an abstract sheep or ram. Strung in modern times and capped with a loop and lobster clasp on the terminals, this is an attractive and wearable example of ancient art meeting modern style! Size (necklace): 17.25" L (43.8 cm); size of largest bead (conical pendant)x 1.2" H (3 cm).

Provenance: The Dere Family Collection, New York, USA, assembled 1970's-2000's; ex-Madame Frances Artuner Collection, Belgium, acquired in 1960's
