Description:

Northern Europe, Baltic Vikings/Viking Rus, ca. 8th to 10th century CE. A collection of nineteen glass and six amber beads strung on a modern sterling silver chain as a wearable necklace! Around 750 to 800 CE the Vikings had established trade routes to Russia, allowing them to access the Baltic Sea where amber was plentiful. Upon obtaining this prized material, Vikings skillfully crafted it into various forms such as beads, as well as fashioning pendants and rings. Beads of glass were often worn as festoons strung between oval brooches, though sometimes also as necklaces. Amber was especially associated with Norse goddess, Freyja. Size: 17.75" L (45.1 cm); largest bead: 0.4" Diameter (1 cm)
