Description:

Pre-Columbian, Ecuador, Manteno culture, ca. 1000 CE. A beautiful and wearable necklace composed with thirteen pottery spindle whorl beads. Each bead is defined by a spherical body, a carination on the midsection or lower body, and a pierced suspension hole. The exterior surfaces of the beads present incised abstract avian motifs, and the finer details are brought forth with applied white pigment. The beads are expertly strung through a braided red thread necklace, and the terminals are capped with an integral loop on one end and an additional spindle whorl fastener on the other. Size (necklace): 19" L (48.3 cm); (largest bead): 0.6" W x 0.6" H (1.5 cm x 1.5 cm).

  • Condition: Strung in modern times and wearable as shown. Pottery spindle whorl beads are ancient, and red thread is modern. Minor abrasions and nicks to some beads, with fading to areas of white pigmentation, and softening to some incised details, otherwise intact and very good. Light earthen deposits and nice remaining avian iconography throughout the beads.
