Native American, Midwestern to Southern United States, Mississippian / Caddo culture, ca. 900 to 1400 CE; Pre-Columbian, Mexico, possibly Maya, ca. 550 to 900 CE. A beautiful and wearable necklace comprised of Mississippian shell disc beads and a large stone pendant with incised motifs made by Pre-Columbian artisans. The petite shell beads are strung in modern times on a cotton cord, at the center is a pair of red shell beads before the large pendant. This stone is an opaque white with deeply engraved repeating motifs- S shapes and stippled dots. Originally this may have functioned as a tool to imprint into the clay or ink fabric or skin like a tattoo with the continuous pattern etched into the surface. Size (strand doubled): 22.5" L (57.2 cm); (roller pendant): 2.125" L x 0.75" W (5.4 cm x 1.9 cm)

Provenance: private Fayetteville, Arkansas, USA collection; ex-Dr. David Harner collection, Springdale, Arkansas, USA, acquired between the 1950s and 1960s
