Classical Antiquities. Magna Graecia, southern Italy, Apulia, ca. 340 to 325 BCE. A near-miniature olpe decorated in the Xenon style with added matt pinkish-red stylized decoration comprised of a central register of repeated sinuous/wavy motifs framed by double striations above and below, with frets above (adorning the shoulder) and below, all in that characteristic pinkish hue over the glossy black glaze that has attained a stunning silvery iridescence. Size: 3.875" W x 3.5" H (9.8 cm x 8.9 cm)

Xenon ware is a specific type of Apulian pottery, named after a vase in Frankfurt (Beazley, EVP, p. 219,1.) that is inscribed with the name: XENON. The type is distinguished by added matt red decoration over black glaze. A beautiful example in wonderful condition.

Provenance: private Carlton collection, Los Angeles, California, USA, acquired between 1965 and 1980
