Description:

Pre-Columbian, Western Mexico, Guanajuato Valley, ca 300 BCE. What remarkable workmanship on this early Chupicuaro pottery flat! Clearly female with breasts delineated under diminutive arms as is characteristic of Chupicuaro representation and prominent belly button on subtly protruding belly, perhaps indicative of her pregnant/fertile state. She dons a fanciful coiffure, ear ornaments, and pectoral and projects an expressive visage with traditional coffee bean shaped eyes and long prominent nose. Red pigment highlighting eyes and earspools. Custom, wood stand. 2 7/8" (7.25 cm) T Provenance: Ex-Shepard private collection, Tucson, AZ, acquired from Primitive Arts Gallery in 1990s; Ex-Gail Fischmann private collection.
