Description:

Ancient Greece, Athens (Attic), ca. 6th century BCE. A charming pottery oinochoe adorned with a trefoil spout and the black figure depiction of Dionysus - Roman Bacchus - the Greek god of wine and fertility. Wrapped in a himation and crowned with a wreath of grape leaves, the ancient deity sits upon a pillar and faces right, grasping a drinking cup in one hand as sprays of ivy or grape vines meander across the field. Vertical dashes embellish the area above him, while the remainder of the vessel is enveloped in black pigment. Size: 2.9" W x 4.8" H (7.4 cm x 12.2 cm)
