Description:

First time at auction...

Ancient Near East / Central Asia, Caucasus region, modern day eastern Turkey (Anatolia) or Armenia, Urartu culture, ca. 9th to 7th century BCE. A stunning bronze pin surmounted by a finial of a recumbent sphinx with tucked wings and a polos crown. The fantastical female gazes forward as she rests atop a striated pedestal above an orb, 2 discs, and a petite loop. Bronze pins like this would have been used for clothing or to decorate a lady's hair. An impressive example of Urartian iconography! Size: 0.4" W x 2.9" H (1 cm x 7.4 cm)

Provenance: private New York, USA collection, before 2000; ex-Robert Horbacz estate, New York, USA.
