Description:

**First Time At Auction**

Ancient Near East, Iran, Iron Age III Period, ca. 800 to 600 BCE. A bronze hand axe (celt), cast using the lost wax process. The form is thin and flat, with an elongated trapezoidal shape, flaring so that the blade and base are concave. It is pierced for attachment just above the base. Comes with custom stand. Size: 1.9" W x 5.65" H (4.8 cm x 14.4 cm); height on stand: 7.2" (18.3 cm).

This weapon was made purely for funerary purposes - iron weapons had replaced bronze for war - and would have been buried with an elite person at one of the major urban areas of this time period, like Nush-i Jan, Godin II, Baba Jan, and Ziwiye.

Provenance: Ex-Kavet Collection, Massachusets, acquired 1974
