Description:

Middle Bronze Age, Near East, ca. 2000 to 1750 BCE. This beautiful axe head has the "duck bill" shape that was common in the Middle Bronze Age. It is covered with an even, deep green patina, particularly on the display side (it comes with a custom stand). Some type of fastening material, like dried tendons, would have held the axe head to a handle. "Duck bill" axe types were distributed from Upper Mesopotamia to Cyprus, although most of the examples have been recorded from along the Mediterranean coast. They are usually recorded as the sole axe type found in funeral deposits of warriors from the Middle Bronze Age in that region and some Egyptian monuments depict the use of axes with these heads by Mesopotamians. Size: Axe head is 4" tall, 2" wide at its widest point, and 1" in depth; 5" tall and 1 1/2" wide with custom stand. Provenance: Ex-private New York, New York collection; ex-private Wagner collection, Cape Cod, MA, acquired in 1960's. All items legal to buy/sell under U.S. Statute covering cultural patrimony Code 2600, CHAPTER 14, and are guaranteed to be as described or your money back. A Certificate of Authenticity will accompany all winning bids.#109062
