Description:

Magna Graecia, South Italic Colonies, Apulia, Xenon, ca. 340 to 325 BCE. A gorgeous wheel-thrown pottery oinochoe of a miniature size and covered in lustrous jet-black glaze. The vessel has a squat circular foot, an egg-shaped body, a trefoil-style pouring spout, and a petite handle arching between rim and shoulder. The front of the body bears a stylized palmette enclosed within concentric bars, all illustrated with fugitive pigment of a soft orange hue. A fabulous example of miniature Xenon artistry! Size: 1.7" W x 2.4" H (4.3 cm x 6.1 cm).

Xenon ware is a specific type of Apulian pottery, named after a famous vase in Frankfurt (Beazley, EVP, p. 219, 1.) that is inscribed with the name: XENON.
