Description:

**Previously Listed At 200**

Pre-Columbian, Western Mexico, Chupicuaro, ca. 500 BCE to 300 CE. A flat terracotta figure of a woman, probably shown as pregnant with a swollen lower belly and pendulous breasts, with a stylized face and large, multi-stranded necklace, enormous spooled earrings, and a three-dimensional headdress with jutting point. Her hands and feet mirror each other in stylized shape and her eyes have a curious quality of having two holes pushed into them to give them an effect that looks almost cartoonish to the modern eye. This is one of the pre-Columbian figures where that makes it easy to understand how abstract expressionists and other modern artists of the early 20th century came to be inspired by their highly stylized forms. Size: 2.1" W x 3.5" H (5.3 cm x 8.9 cm)

Provenance: Ex-private Peter Arnovick collection, Los Altos, CA acquired around 1980. Mr. Arnovick was a collector and dealer of ancient and ethnographic cultures.
