Description:

Pre-Columbian, Peru, Nazca culture, ca. 100 to 400 CE. A fascinating ceramic nude female figure who sits on an ample buttocks with spread legs and arms. Decorative artwork - including two sun-faces painted on either side of her belly button - draws attention to her pregnant stomach. Similar decorations circle her clearly sculpted genitalia. Elsewhere her body is finely painted with more vivid polychrome decoration: russet red and black details contrasting with the creamy beige ground. The woman appears to be tattooed over much of her body, including her arms, legs, back, and buttocks. Her face is comprised of huge almond-shaped eyes and hair that falls to her shoulders and in long, wavy locks down her back. Female figures are relatively rare in Nazca pottery, making this piece particularly unique. Size: 6.4" W x 6.7" H (16.3 cm x 17 cm)

Provenance: private southern California, USA collection, acquired in the 1970s to mid-1980s
