Description:

Pre-Columbian, South Coast Peru, Nazca, ca. 250 to 540 CE. An interesting Nazca head jar, the lower portion of the vessel of a rounded form resolving to a sharply constricted upper end below a gently flaring neck, all hand painted in hues of brick red, orange, cream, white, and black-brown. The lower portion is painted to represent a trophy head with stylized hair, narrow oval eyes with barely visible round pupils, simple arched brows, concentric semicircular face painting below the lower rims, a protruding nose, and a wavy tumpline stretching from ear to era. The mouth shows flanking mustachios and is pinned with thorns. On the back of the coiffure is another sinuous object, perhaps representing a rope attached to a bola or another tumpline. The generous neck is adorned with repeated, interlocked trophy head deities or tasters - as the heads or masks are interconnected with the tongue of one joining the brow of another. A wonderful example! Size: 6.25" W x 6.625" H (15.9 cm x 16.8 cm)
