Pre-Columbian, South Coast Peru, Nazca, ca. 200 to 600 CE. A lovely round-bottomed polychrome ceramic bowl with one very wide painted register upon slightly concave walls, featuring a painted iconographic program representing either bird feathers or perhaps more interestingly, a root vegetable indigenous to the Andean highlands known as mashu or añu with the tubers painted in hues of red and chocolate brown beneath the earth's surface, delineated by meandering lines, and orange leafy tops above the surface - all upon a rich white ground with chocolate brown bands framing the walls.
