Description:

Pre-Columbian, Southern Peru, Nazca (Nasca), 300 to 700 CE. This is a narrow-necked, wide pottery bowl with a semimodeled human face protruding from it; the face appears to be male based on its small mustache and triangular goatee. The person's nose protrudes from the side of the pot while the rest is painted on the surface; he wears long, dangling earrings and has a line-drawing motif that calls to mind the Nazca Lines that loops around his forehead and to the back of his head. He has red painted under his eyes in geometric fashion, but otherwise there are no indications that this might be a representation of a trophy head; the small mouth is curved upwards as if smiling. Size: 6.75" W x 4.5" H (17.1 cm x 11.4 cm).
