Description:

Pre-Columbian, Southern Peru, Nazca 5 Phase, ca. 125 to 250 CE. One of the most outstanding representations of the Masked Mythical Being (Anthropomorphic Mythical Being) finely painted in a wide variety of colors - red, orange, tan, grey, black, and white hues. It is depicted with a characteristic feline head with a headband holding several trophy heads. His mouth mask is shown with lateral elements in the form of cat whiskers which also appear to be stylized trophy heads. He also dons an impressive necklace or chin strap comprised of several miniature trophy heads. While the Nazca did not leave written records explaining this mythical being, several appear to be associated with trophy heads and others with agricultural functions. A well-executed example! Size: 5" W x 3.5" H (12.7 cm x 8.9 cm)
