Description:

Pre-Columbian, South Peru, ca. 125 to 250 CE. This terracotta beaker rises from a slightly curved base and presents an attractive silhouette with its subtly bulging lower body. The surface decoration is divided into horizontal bands from the base to the mouth. The wide lower band is decorated with four agricultural or solar deities painted in chocolate brown on a white ground. Above is a solid orange band outlined in black. Next is a register adorned with adorable mice in black and orange on a white ground. Above this is a solid red band, and finally a series of white banner-like panels appear to be suspended from a now feint black line around the mouth rim. These are set against an orange ground, and each panel contains an abstract bird facing downward and in profile, in alternating colors of red-brown and orange. The white panels are interconnected as if imitating a textile hanging used in an architectural setting or temple precinct. Size: 4" W x 6.5" H (10.2 cm x 16.5 cm)
